TOOLS:

  • GULL pdf (download here)

  • Scissors

  • Glue

  • Tape

  • 2 Straws (1 BIG STRAW & 1 small straw)

  • Measuring tool (ruler OR “straw measure” found on worksheet)

  • Markers, crayons, colors

  • Glitter? GLITTER!!!

  • Ketchup & fries (optional)

STEP 1:

Print GULL worksheet. Print on cardstock so that your wings flap and not flop. Printer paper will be TOO FLOPPY for your wings to flap :( Construction paper can work in a pinch, just be sure that your wings are rigid.

STEP 2:

Color your GULL! Garbage Gulls are scraggly with grays, browns, and blacks, but your GULL is YOURS! What is your favorite color? What garbage has your GULL gotten into? Hopefully GLITTER. LOTS of glitter. Have fun!

STEP 3:

Cut GULL, flying strip and “straw measure.” Save flying strip and measure for a lil’ later :)

STEP 4:

FOLD your gull in ½. GULL is symmetrical, so both sides should match up!

STEP 5:

FOLD flying strip on dotted lines and glue to your GULL’s belly on either side of the middle fold. It should look like a big letter V squished very very close.

STEP 6:

Trim bendy part of straws. CUT big straw and small straw using straw measure guide.

  • Big straw: measure 2 ½ inches, mark, and then cut into the straw opening until you reach the mark. Rotate straw and cut again for a matching cut!

  • Small straw: measure 2 inches, mark, and cut. Turn straw and cut again!

  • Both straws should make a letter Y shape*

STEP 7:

Ok, now the hard part…

  • Slide your small straw over your (now dry) flying strip. Tape in place.

  • Fold your GULL in ½ with wings pointing UP. Slide big straw over small straw and as far as you can go up your wings. TAPE IN PLACE on each wing. (ALMOST DONE! SO EXCITING!!)

  • Add an extra piece of tape around the big straw connection on each wing.

  • Fold your GULL with wings pointing DOWN. Slide big straw down, and trim a small piece off for desired wing motion. Trimming more will allow more wing movement*

  • Breath in… Breath out… YOU DID IT!

STEP 8:

UNFOLD gull. Using one hand on the small straw and one hand on the big straw, push the big straw UP and pull DOWN to make your gull FLAP and FLY!

HAVE FUN!
